Habitat for Humanity Volunteers Give Back to the Community

August 3, 2005 - JACKSON, Wyoming – Habitat for Humanity is usually in the position of looking for volunteers. However, this week the non-profit had the opportunity to offer help to several area organizations.

A youth group of sixty willing and able high school students and their chaperones from Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, North Dakota descended upon Jackson on Sunday evening with one mission – to provide service to the Jackson community.

This week, nineteen of those people are working on Habitat projects, including landscaping and building, while forty-one have dedicated themselves to other service projects in the area. The projects include restoration of a historic building for St. John’s Episcopal Church, trail building with the US Forest Service and clearing brush and painting buildings with Grand Teton National Park.

“We are so happy to be hosting this fantastic group of kids and their dedicated adult leaders,” said Terri Marino, Habitat’s Executive Director. “They have enthusiastically embraced all of the projects we set up for them and are working amazingly fast. We are busy making sure there is enough work to last through the week!”

| Despite this influx of volunteers, Habitat is always looking for more people to help. Habitat volunteers not only build the homes, but they work in the office, help customers in the ReStore and serve on committees and the Board of Directors. | Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Teton Area builds basic homes and sells them at cost with a no-interest loan to low-income families. Homeowners are chosen based on their need for housing, their ability to make a mortgage payment, and their willingness to invest 500 hours of sweat equity into the construction of their home. Habitat homes are built primarily by volunteers and with the support of local donors. |
