Habitat for Humanity Builds 200,000th Home

August 15, 2005 - At 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, Habitat for Humanity dedicated its 200,000th house, which is located in Knoxville, Tennessee. Koffi Kouassi and Tonya Harper purchased the home today and when their eight-year-old twins crossed the threshold, it marked a major milestone for Habitat: one million people worldwide are living in Habitat homes.

Just 24 minutes after the Kouassi-Harper family received the key to their new home, the owners of the 200,001st Habitat house — built last week in Kanyakumari, India — were presented with their key. Michel and his wife Vivitha will live in the 200,001st house with their four children. Michel and Vivitha’s house was destroyed by the December 26th tsunami and they had little hope of rebuilding until they learned about Habitat’s program. “With our low income, it is unimaginable to have a new house, so this is great,” says Vivitha. “I can’t believe this is happening to us.”

According to Builder Magazine, Habitat for Humanity was the 19th largest home builder in the U.S in 2004 and is the only non-profit on their list of the nation’s top 100 builders. In fiscal year 2004, Habitat built a total of 22,046 homes in 100 countries.

The Habitat affiliate in Jackson will be dedicating its eighth home on September 15, a home that was built with funds raised through last year’s Old Bill’s Fun Run for Charities. These eight homes house 28 people including 18 children, and Habitat is hoping that this Old Bill’s Fun Run donors will again contribute enough to sponsor their tenth home.

Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Teton Area builds basic homes and sells them at cost with a no-interest loan to low-income families. Homeowners are chosen based on their need for housing, their ability to make a mortgage payment, and their willingness to invest 500 hours of sweat equity into the construction of their home. Habitat homes are built primarily by volunteers and with the support of local donors. For more information, visit www.tetonhabitat.org.
