Habitat for Humanity Seeking Homeowners

JACKSON, Wyoming - January 12, 2005- Habitat for Humanity is beginning the selection process for two homes the organization will begin building later in 2005. To receive an application, potential applicants must attend an information session held by Habitat at the Teton County Library.

The information sessions will be held on Thursday, January 27, 6:00 – 7:00 pm and Saturday, January 29, 10:00 – 11:00 am. Applications will be distributed at these two meetings and Habitat representatives will be available after each meeting to assist with completion of the applications. Information session attendance is mandatory for all applicants.

A committee of volunteers will select families based on three criteria: housing need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner with Habitat.

To qualify for a housing need, families must currently live in substandard housing conditions. Substandard housing conditions include, but are not limited to structural, wiring, plumbing, accessibility, crowding, heating and cost problems.
Ability to pay means that a family has a reliable monthly income source available that is at least 25% of the county median income. Families must demonstrate ability to make regular monthly payments, as well as the ability to save a small amount of money for payment of closing costs.
Families must demonstrate a willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity through eagerness in Habitat’s homeownership program. This includes acceptance of our sweat equity requirements, our high publicity program, a commitment to monthly payments, and responsibility for the care of their home.

Habitat for Humanity builds homes with those in need in Teton County. Homes are built by volunteers and sold with a no-interest, no-profit mortgage to ensure low monthly payments. Homeowners are required to contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” on their home before moving in. Habitat also runs the Habitat ReStore, which sells building supplies and furniture, to help fund the building of homes.
