| Habitat
for Humanity Will Build Green Affordable Homes |
| |
|
JACKSON, Wyoming - April 27, 2005 -
Habitat for Humanity will be constructing its
first “green” affordable home this summer in the Millward Subdivision as part of its initiative
to promote affordable green building in Teton
County. |
| |
|
“Keeping homes affordable over the long-term is
our number one priority,” says Habitat Executive
Director, Terri Marino. “While we already take
measures to build energy-efficient homes and
often use recycled materials from our ReStore in
our homes, we know we can further reduce energy
costs for our future homeowners by building
smarter.” |
| |
|
Habitat has been working with volunteer
construction and engineering professionals with
expertise in green-building to establish
standards that will be used in the construction
of future Habitat homes. In addition to
building more energy-efficient homes, Habitat
hopes its efforts will play a role in educating
the community about green-building. |
| |
|
“We see the Habitat jobsite as a place where
people can learn about green building materials
and techniques while contributing to their
community,” says Jon Christensen, Habitat Board
Member and Chairman of Habitat’s ‘Green Team’.
“Giving people a chance to get hands on
experience helps promote sustainable
construction in our valley.” |

To get involved, visit Habitat’s booth at the
EcoFair this Saturday at the Presbyterian Church
or contact Dan Malcolm, Habitat’s Volunteer
Coordinator, at 734-0828, extension 3. You can
also attend the Teton Green Building Conference
May 25th through the 27th
and participate in an auction of green materials
and services that will raise money to support
Habitat’s Affordable Green Building Initiative. |

| Habitat for Humanity builds homes with those in need in Teton County. Homes are built by volunteers and are then sold to pre-selected partner families with a no-interest, no-profit mortgage. Homeowners are required to contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” to their home before they are allowed to move in. |
